Manning Marable, Scholar of Black History

Dr. Manning Marable died today.  The photo at the left is dated.  In recent years, the afro was cropped and mostly white, but this is how he looked when I first met him. The afro always reminded me of Frederick Douglass.   I had the chance to work with Dr. Marable the summer before I graduated from college.  He was at the University of Colorado at the time, and perhaps in the beginning stages of his biography of Malcolm X  (My research project that summer, directed by Dr. Marable, was on Malcolm).  Dr. Marable’s highly anticipated tome,  Malcolm X: A Life of Reinvention, is to be published this Monday.

From the New York Times:
Manning Marable, Historian and Social Critic, Dies at 60
On Eve of Redefining Malcolm X, Biographer Dies
