In the mid 1990s while working at a university, I compiled my first list of “African American Internet Resources.” At my next job, I continued to add to the list. By the early 2000s, a static web page was no longer viable and I desperately wanted a database. But lacking the requisite skills, the database never happened…that is until I landed at UNC-CH.
So, this is a shout out to the IT folks at Davis Library, especially Tim and his team of graduate students assigned to the project. In April 2005, my dream was finally realized with the launch of The Sonja Haynes Stone Center Library for Black Culture and History Guide to the Web. Yeah, I know it’s a long title and I really wish I had come up with something better. Nevertheless, the creation and development of the guide would not have been possible without Tim and his team and my team of graduate students who reviewed and wrote summaries of the over 1,000 web sites in the Guide.
