April is Jazz Appreciation Month

Am I the last to know that April is Jazz Appreciation Month?

Jazz Appreciation Month or JAM, as it is affectionately known, was established by the Smithsonian’s Museum of American History and first celebrated in April 2002.   Why April?  Apparently, quite a few jazz greats were born in April:  Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, and Charles Mingus to name a few.  April was also selected as it coincides with the end of the school year and opportunities to celebrate year-end jazz concerts and the like.

In appreciation of jazz and the contribution of vocalist/pianist Shirley Horn, please enjoy You Won’t Forget Me, from Horn’s CD by the same name.
